Project Statement
Animated Urns is an ongoing series of zoetropic vessels. Jars are thrown on the pottery wheel, and are inspired by the historical forms from countries connected to the Manila Galleon (such as the Philippines, China, and Mexico). They are then adorned with patterns that come to life when incrementally rotated, photographed, and played back in sequence, employing moving image principles of early animation devices such as the zoetrope and phenakistoscope. These patterns allude to natural and mythic motifs, such as spirits, snakes, insects, water, gardens, or celestial bodies.
This animation of inanimate objects challenges boundaries between living and non-living things. Inert vessels become active receptacles of meaning. An alchemical process of time and form turns vitrified clay into fluid, pulsing, living matter. Through these vessels I highlight the connection between life and death, and challenge notions of subjectivity.
