Plates
Project Statement
“Plates” is a series of illustrative ceramic slabs, made of stoneware, underglaze, and glaze. They depict familiar scenes such as a pile of sticks, a horse in a field, or a pool. Whether through sculpting, carving, or glazing, the markmaking employed to make these images is physical and material. Each one is a vignette of a fleeting memory in solid form. The title of this body of work alludes to multiple meanings of “plate”: vibrant illustration plates in books, the size of a common dinner plate, the heaviness and hardness of a plate of armor, the drifting tectonic plates of the Earth.
